Kalishta Monastery: Spiritual Sanctuary by the Lake Guide
Nestled on the shores of Lake Ohrid, just a few kilometers from Struga, lies the Kalishta Monastery, a serene and historically significant complex of cave churches and more recent constructions. This tranquil sanctuary offers a glimpse into the region's rich religious heritage and provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The Kalishta Monastery's history dates back to the 14th century, with the cave churches being the oldest part of the complex. These churches, carved directly into the rock face, are adorned with beautiful frescoes that depict scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints. The monastery has played an important role in preserving Orthodox Christian traditions in the region throughout the centuries. Visitors can explore the cave churches and admire the ancient frescoes, which are considered some of the finest examples of Byzantine art in North Macedonia. Light candles and offer prayers in the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery. Take a walk along the lake shore and enjoy the stunning views. The monastery also has a small museum that displays religious artifacts and historical documents.
